Lift-off describes the initial movement when the barbell leaves the floor in a heavy lift. This phase requires a controlled and steady pull to maintain a correct body position. The athlete must engage the legs and back simultaneously to move the weight off the ground. A weightlifter focused on a slow start to keep the bar close to their shins. Starting with a balanced lift-off ensures the barbell stays on the most efficient vertical path possible. Proper mechanics at this stage prevent the weight from swinging forward and causing a failed attempt.
