Overhead stability describes the ability to hold a heavy barbell steady and motionless above the head. This physical trait requires strong shoulders and a solid core to prevent the weight from shaking. Judges look for a completely still bar to signal a successful and completed lift attempt. The athlete showed great overhead stability by holding the heavy jerk for several seconds. Developing this control prevents the bar from crashing down after a successful upward drive from the legs. Lifters practice holding weights at the top to train the small stabilizing muscles in the arms.
