Receiving depth refers to how low an athlete squats to catch a barbell during a lift. This distance determines whether a lift is classified as a power movement or a full squat movement. Elite lifters often use a very deep position to catch much heavier weights closer to the floor. The athlete practiced their receiving depth to ensure they could sit low under a heavy snatch. A deeper catch requires more flexibility in the ankles, hips, and the upper back muscles. Improving this range of motion allows the lifter to succeed even if the bar is low.
