Split Jerk Meaning in Weightlifting

The split jerk involves driving a barbell from the shoulders to an overhead position. The athlete pushes the bar up while simultaneously jumping into a long lunge stance. One leg lands forward with a vertical shin while the back leg stays slightly bent. This wide footprint creates a very stable base to support extremely heavy weights overhead. A lifter holds the bar steady before stepping the feet back into a line. Locking the elbows instantly upon landing ensures the referees count the lift as a success. This move requires more balance and coordination than any other part of the lift.
