The split recovery describes the footwork used to return to a standing position after lunging. The athlete must move the feet back together while holding the weight high overhead. The front foot always moves back halfway first to keep the center of gravity. Then the back foot moves forward to meet the front foot in a line. A lifter stands still with feet parallel to show total control of the heavy bar. Moving the back foot first can cause the weight to tip forward and fail. Practice drills focus on the specific rhythm of these steps to ensure a smooth finish.
