The tall clean describes a weightlifting drill performed while standing completely upright on the balls of the feet. The athlete starts with the barbell at the hips without using any leg drive or momentum. This exercise focuses entirely on the speed of the pull under the bar and the catch. It forces the lifter to move their feet and body very quickly into the receiving squat position. A lifter pulls the bar up and instantly drops under it to catch the weight at the shoulders. This method helps fix slow transitions and teaches the athlete how to use their arms effectively. Coaches use this drill to improve the technical timing of the clean without heavy leg fatigue.
