Tempo Squat Meaning in Weightlifting

A tempo squat involves performing a barbell squat at a specific, controlled speed during each phase. The athlete follows a timed count for the descent, the bottom pause, and the upward drive. This method increases the time under tension for the leg muscles to build greater stability. It also helps the lifter identify and fix any technical shifts in their body position. An athlete counts to three while slowly lowering a heavy barbell during a training session. This controlled movement forces the core to remain tight and prevents the lifter from bouncing. Coaches use this slow speed to strengthen the tendons and improve overall squatting mechanics.
