A warm-up set involves lifting light weights at the beginning of a workout to prepare the joints. These sets increase blood flow to the muscles and help the athlete practice the correct movement pattern. Lifters usually start with an empty barbell and slowly add small plates until they reach their working weight. Performing these sets prevents sudden injuries and helps the nervous system wake up for the heavy work ahead. An athlete does two sets of ten reps with an empty bar before adding any heavy plates. This transition ensures that the body is physically and mentally ready for the high intensity part of training. Skipping these sets can lead to poor performance and a much higher risk of muscle strains.
