The false grip describes a hand position where the thumb stays on the same side as the fingers. This is also known as a suicide grip because the bar is not fully locked in. In weightlifting, this grip is very rare and generally discouraged due to the high safety risks. Most lifters use a hook grip instead to ensure the bar does not slip out. An athlete avoids this grip while performing a heavy overhead press to maintain total control. Keeping the thumb wrapped around the bar provides a secure and stable connection during fast moves. Safety remains the top priority when handling heavy metal barbells during every training session.
