Fast pull describes the rapid acceleration of the barbell from the floor to the hips during a lift. The athlete must transition from a controlled start to an explosive finish to generate enough upward bar speed. This speed ensures the weight reaches the necessary height for the lifter to drop underneath into a squat. A slow pull often results in the bar crashing down or failing to reach the shoulders. A lifter increases their speed as the barbell passes the knees to finish the second pull. Maintaining a high velocity allows the athlete to handle much heavier weights with better technical precision. Coaches use speed drills to help lifters build the fast twitch muscle response required for success.
