High Pull Meaning in Weightlifting

The high pull is a training exercise where the athlete pulls the barbell to the upper chest. This movement mimics the snatch or clean but excludes the catch phase in the squat position. The lifter focuses on full leg extension and using the arms to guide the bar high and close. This drill builds the specific pulling power and upper body strength needed for the Olympic lifts. An athlete performs three high pulls to emphasize keeping the bar near the body during the pull. It helps lifters learn how to keep the bar moving vertically rather than swinging it outward. Coaches use this exercise to improve the final phase of the pull for better technical timing.
