Lat Engagement Meaning in Weightlifting

Lat engagement refers to the activation of the large back muscles to keep the barbell close. The athlete uses these muscles to pull the bar toward the shins and thighs during the lift. Keeping the bar tight to the body reduces the distance the weight must travel for success. This connection prevents the barbell from swinging away which would make the weight feel much heavier. A weightlifter squeezes their armpits together to keep the bar touching their legs during the first pull. Strong engagement of the back muscles provides the stability needed to maintain a vertical path for the bar. This technique remains a fundamental part of moving heavy weights with maximum efficiency and control.
