Soft Lockout Meaning in Weightlifting

A soft lockout occurs when a weightlifter fails to fully straighten and hold their elbows during a catch. The arms may wobble or bend slightly after the barbell moves into the overhead position in a lift. This is a serious technical fault that usually results in the referees declaring the lift unsuccessful or invalid. Referees watch the elbows very closely to ensure the athlete shows total control and a rigid frame. A lifter receives red lights because their left arm bent slightly while they were holding the snatch. This error often happens due to a lack of shoulder stability or a weight that is too heavy. Athletes practice aggressive punching of the bar to ensure the elbows snap into a firm lock.
