Stretch Reflex Meaning in Weightlifting

The stretch reflex describes the natural elastic response of muscles when they are quickly stretched under a heavy load. This physiological reaction acts like a coiled spring to provide extra upward force during the transition of a lift. Weightlifters utilize this effect by descending quickly into a squat and immediately driving back up to a standing position. Timing the movement to catch this bounce allows the athlete to move much heavier weights than a slow pause. A lifter catches a clean in a deep squat and uses the quick muscle rebound to stand up fast. This reflex reduces the amount of raw muscular effort needed to overcome the most difficult part of the movement. Coaches teach athletes to maintain a very tight core to ensure this energy transfers directly into the barbell.
