Underpull Meaning in Weightlifting

The underpull describes the critical technical phase where the athlete pulls their body down into the receiving position. This action happens after the legs finish pushing and the barbell has reached its maximum height in the air. The lifter uses the weight of the bar to pull themselves down faster than the force of gravity alone. This movement is essential for getting into a deep squat before the heavy barbell starts to fall back down. A weightlifter uses an aggressive underpull to snap their body into a low squat for a heavy snatch. Improving the speed of this transition allows the athlete to catch weights that would otherwise be too heavy. Mastering this phase requires high levels of coordination and a fearless approach to the moving metal barbell.
