Wave Loading Meaning in Weightlifting

Wave loading involves a training method where the weight on the barbell increases and then decreases in a specific pattern. The athlete performs a series of sets that get heavier and then starts over with a slightly higher weight. This psychological and physical trick helps the nervous system prepare for maximum efforts by using lighter sets as a reset. It allows the lifter to handle more total volume at a high intensity without getting mentally or physically burned out. A lifter performs three reps at eighty kilos and then two at ninety and then one at one hundred. This wave pattern repeats starting at eighty five kilos to build the confidence needed for a new personal record. Many elite coaches use this system to help athletes break through strength plateaus during the most difficult phases.
