A closed turn involves a specific technique where the swimmer breathes during the wall transition. The swimmer touches the wall with one hand while keeping the other arm underwater. This method allows the athlete to take a quick breath before pushing off again. It differs from a flip turn because the swimmer stays upright during the entire move. A swimmer performs this turn during the breaststroke or butterfly leg of a race. This turn provides a moment of recovery but usually takes more time than others. Keeping the head low during this turn helps maintain a streamlined body position underwater. Coaches teach this turn to beginners to help them manage their breathing and timing.
