A draft pack consists of a group of swimmers following one another closely. This formation commonly appears in open water races or long distance pool events. The lead swimmer faces the most water resistance while those behind enjoy less. Swimmers in the pack save significant energy by staying in the leader’s wake. A group of five athletes swims in a tight line during a triathlon. Staying in the pack requires constant focus to avoid hitting another person’s feet. This strategy allows swimmers to maintain a faster pace for a longer time. Members of the pack often take turns leading to share the physical workload.
