The freestyle catch is the initial phase of the underwater pull where the hand grabs water. After the hand enters the water, the swimmer flexes the wrist and elbow to begin pulling. This movement creates the necessary leverage to move the body forward over the stationary hand. A high elbow position during this phase ensures the forearm acts as a large paddle. A swimmer catches the water deep in front of their shoulder to start a stroke. Success in the catch prevents the arm from slipping through the water without generating power. Coaches use specific drills to help beginners feel the pressure of the water on their palms. A strong catch serves as the foundation for a fast and efficient freestyle stroke.
