The freestyle finish refers to the final touch of the wall to complete a race. In freestyle competitions, a swimmer can touch the wall with any part of their body. Most athletes use a full-arm extension to reach the touchpad with their fingertips as quickly as possible. Swimmers must avoid taking a breath during the final few strokes to maintain their momentum. An athlete lunges toward the wall to stop the clock at the end of a sprint. The race officially ends the moment the swimmer makes contact with the electronic timing sensor. Proper timing of the final stroke prevents the swimmer from gliding too long before the touch. A firm finish ensures the timing system records the most accurate result possible.
