Hypoxic training involves swimming sets with a restricted breathing pattern to improve oxygen efficiency. This method requires the athlete to take fewer breaths than usual during a specific distance. Swimmers might breathe every five or seven strokes instead of every two or three pulls. This practice strengthens the lungs and helps the body adapt to lower oxygen levels. A swimmer completes a lap while breathing only three times over fifty meters. Mastering this technique is crucial for maintaining speed during long underwater phases after turns. Coaches use these sets to prepare athletes for the final sprint of a race. Proper supervision is essential during hypoxic training to ensure the safety of every swimmer.
