A lane rope is a floating line of plastic buoys that separates the pool lanes. These ropes serve two main purposes: defining the swimming area and reducing water turbulence. The spinning plastic pieces on the rope absorb waves created by swimmers in adjacent lanes. This creates a calmer surface which allows every athlete to swim at their maximum speed. A swimmer accidentally brushes against the red and white lane rope during a butterfly race. Most ropes change color near the ends of the pool to warn swimmers of the wall. Maintaining a straight path between the ropes prevents collisions with other participants in the heat. These ropes are vital for creating a fair and fast environment for competitive swimming events.
