Relay order defines the sequence in which four teammates compete during a single relay race event. In a freestyle relay, coaches can place their swimmers in any sequence to maximize their speed. In a medley relay, the order is fixed as backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and then freestyle. The strategy usually involves placing the fastest or most reliable swimmer in the final anchor position. A coach chooses a strong starter to lead the relay and build an early lead. Changing the order can significantly impact the team’s ability to handle the waves of other teams. Athletes must stay in their assigned order to avoid an immediate disqualification of the whole team. A well-planned relay order uses the unique strengths of each individual to benefit the entire group.
