Single-Arm Drill Meaning in Swimming

A single-arm drill involves swimming using only one arm while the other stays still. The stationary arm can remain extended in front or rest at the swimmer’s side. This exercise allows the athlete to focus entirely on the pull and recovery mechanics of a single limb. It helps identify imbalances in strength or technique that might be hidden during the full stroke. A swimmer completes two laps of freestyle using only their left arm for the pull. This drill improves body rotation and ensures the pulling arm follows the correct underwater path. Coaches use this to fix ‘crossing over’ the midline and to improve the high elbow catch. Performing this drill slowly ensures the swimmer builds better muscle memory for a more efficient full stroke.
