Split Request Meaning in Swimming

A split request is a formal application for an official time at an intermediate distance. This occurs when a swimmer wants their time recorded for a shorter segment within a longer race. The most common use is during the lead-off leg of a relay or the first part of a distance event. This time must be recorded by the automatic timing system to count for records or qualifications. A coach submits a split request to get an official fifty-meter time during a hundred-meter race. Officials must approve the request before the event begins to ensure the timing system is set. This allows swimmers to earn credit for a fast performance even if the full race is longer. The split time remains valid as an individual result as long as the swimmer finishes the entire race.
