Takeover time measures the gap between an incoming swimmer and an outgoing relay teammate. Electronic timing systems calculate this by comparing the touch on the wall to the block departure. A negative takeover time means the swimmer left the block before their teammate touched the wall. This result leads to an immediate disqualification for the entire four-person relay team. A coach checks the timing sheet to see a safe takeover time of zero point two seconds. Athletes aim for a takeover time as close to zero as possible without being early. Proper timing during the exchange is often the difference between winning and losing a close relay. Teams practice their starts for hours to achieve a fast and legal takeover time.
