Taper Meaning in Swimming

Taper is a phase of reduced training volume used to prepare for a major competition. During this period, swimmers rest their muscles while maintaining high-intensity speed in short bursts. This allows the body to recover and build energy for a peak performance at the end. Tapers can last from a few days to several weeks depending on the athlete’s specialty. A swimmer feels energetic and fast during the final week of their championship taper. The goal is to reach the meet with maximum physical power and a refreshed mental state. Successful tapers often lead to significant drops in race times and new personal best records. Coaches carefully plan the workload to ensure athletes do not lose their feel for the water.
