The Tarzan drill involves swimming freestyle with your head completely out of the water. Swimmers look straight ahead and keep their chin above the surface while performing a high-tempo arm pull. This exercise builds neck and back strength and improves the power of the underwater catch. A water polo player uses the Tarzan drill to maintain vision of the ball while swimming. It also helps competitive swimmers learn to keep their heads steady during high-speed sprints. This drill is a favorite for developing a stronger, more aggressive arm recovery.
