Underwater dolphin refers to the powerful, wave-like leg kick used after starts and turns. Swimmers keep their legs together and move them in a whip-like motion, similar to a dolphin’s tail. This is widely considered the fastest way to move through the water and is a core part of modern racing strategy. An athlete gains two body lengths on the field by using a strong underwater dolphin kick off the start. It requires significant core strength and lung capacity to maintain for the full fifteen-meter limit. Most elite swimmers spend a large portion of their training specifically improving their dolphin kick power.
