Unilateral Breathing Meaning in Swimming

Unilateral breathing is a freestyle technique where a swimmer always breathes to the same side. For example, a swimmer might breathe every two strokes, always turning their head to the right. While this can be faster for short sprints, it can lead to muscle imbalances or a lopsided stroke over long distances. A sprinter uses unilateral breathing to keep their rhythm fast and consistent during a fifty-meter race. Many coaches prefer ‘bilateral breathing’ (alternating sides) for training to ensure a more symmetrical and healthy swimming technique. However, in a close race, many athletes switch to unilateral breathing to keep their eyes on their closest rivals.
