Short Pass Meaning in Netball

A short pass is a throw between two teammates who are standing very close together. Netball rules require enough space between the hands of the passer and the hands of the receiver. This gap must be large enough for a defender to move into or deflect the ball legally. Using short passes helps a team maintain control of the ball in very crowded areas. A center uses a short pass to give the ball to a wing attack near the line. This technique is effective for moving the ball safely through a tight and organized defensive press. Players must be careful not to stand too close to each other to avoid a technical violation. One real-world example involves a player handing the ball off to a teammate at a safe distance.
