A sideline throw-in occurs when the ball goes out of bounds over one of the long lines. The umpire awards possession to the team that did not touch the ball last before it exited.
The player taking the throw must stand with their feet behind the sideline to restart play. They have three seconds to pass the ball to a teammate who is inside the court. A wing defense takes a sideline throw-in to move the ball out of defense.
This restart is a great opportunity to execute a set play and gain forward court momentum. Teammates must lead into open spaces to provide a clear target for the person taking the throw. One real-world example involves a player passing from the sideline to a center in the middle third.
