Simultaneous contact occurs when two opposing players collide with each other at the exact same time. In this situation, the umpire determines that neither player is solely responsible for the physical interference. Because netball is a non-contact sport, the official must decide how to restart the game fairly. Usually, a toss-up is awarded between the two involved players to decide who gets the ball. A goal shooter and goal keeper experience simultaneous contact while jumping for a high rebound. This rule ensures that players are not unfairly penalized for accidental and equal physical interactions during play. Athletes must still attempt to avoid contact by using better positioning and spatial awareness on court. One real-world example shows two players bumping shoulders while chasing a loose ball at high speed.
