A step back shot is a scoring technique where a player moves away from the post while shooting. The shooter catches the ball and takes a legal step backward to create space from a defender. This move increases the distance between the ball and the reaching arms of a tall goal keeper. It requires excellent balance and core strength to maintain accuracy while moving away from the target. A goal shooter uses a step back shot to score over an aggressive and close-marking defender. This specialized skill allows shooters to be effective even when they are trapped near the edge of the circle. Proper follow-through is vital since the player is moving their weight away from the goal ring. One real-world example involves a player stepping back from the defender to sink a long-range goal.
