A through ball is a direct pass sent into open space for a teammate to run onto. Instead of throwing to where a player is standing, the passer targets where they will be. This technique exploits gaps in the defense and allows the team to move downcourt rapidly. It requires a high level of understanding between the passer and the runner to be successful. A center sends a through ball to a wing attack sprinting toward the goal third. This type of pass is very difficult for defenders to intercept because of its speed. Proper weight on the throw ensures the teammate can catch the ball without slowing their momentum. One real-world example involves a player running past their marker to catch a ball in space.
