The wing defence is a defensive midcourt position tasked with marking the opposing wing attack player. This player can move within the center third and the defensive goal third of the netball court. Their main objective is to disrupt the flow of the ball and prevent it from entering the circle. Constant pressure and tight marking are essential for forcing turnovers and making the attacker feel crowded. A wing defence intercepts a pass intended for the wing attack to start a new offensive transition. This role requires great stamina and the ability to track an opponent’s every movement for sixty minutes. They also help move the ball out of the defensive end once a rebound has been secured. One real-world example features the wing defence blocking a lead toward the attacking goal third.
