Zone Management Meaning in Netball

Zone management describes the strategic coordination of players to control specific areas of the netball court. This tactic involves defenders shifting as a collective unit to block passing lanes and restrict the movement of attackers. Instead of focusing on one opponent, players prioritize protecting the space that leads directly toward the goal circle. A defensive unit uses zone management to trap the attacking team near the transverse line. This approach requires constant communication to ensure no gaps open up when the ball moves across the court. Proper management of these zones forces the offense to take long, risky passes that are easier to intercept. It is a highly effective way to slow down a fast-paced team and regain control of the game flow. One real-world example features three midcourt players forming a diamond shape to block the center of the court.
