Definition: Loading the bases (or “bases loaded”) occurs when there are base runners on first, second, and third base at the same time. This is a high-pressure situation because any subsequent walk, hit, or hit-by-pitch will automatically result in at least one run scoring.
Example: After three straight walks, the pitcher found himself with the bases loaded and the team’s best hitter coming to the plate.
