An injury time-out is a temporary pause in play to assist a hurt. The officials stop the game immediately if a player falls and cannot stand. A referee blows the whistle when a player twists an ankle during a jump. No balls may be thrown while the clock is stopped for this reason. Medical staff or coaches enter the court to check on the safety of the athlete. Once the player is safe, the teams return to their previous starting positions. This pause ensures that the health of the participants always comes before the score. Play resumes only after the head official confirms that the court is clear.
