An invalid throw is a toss that does not follow the legal requirements. This happens if a player throws a ball while standing out of bounds. A player tosses the ball high into the ceiling lights by total accident. The officials rule this throw dead and the ball goes to the opponents. Invalid throws can also include balls released after the referee blows the final whistle. This rule prevents players from using illegal positions to gain an unfair throwing advantage. Every throw must come from within the legal playing area to count as live. Players must focus on their footing and timing to avoid these technical errors.
