Definition: The pitcher’s mound is the raised circular hill in the middle of the infield from which the pitcher throws the ball toward home plate. It is topped with a white rubber slab that the pitcher must touch with their foot while delivering a pitch.
The mound is exactly 60 feet and 6 inches away from home plate. By being slightly elevated, it gives the pitcher a physical advantage, allowing them to use gravity to create more power and a downward angle on their pitches. It is the center of the game’s action, as every play begins with the pitcher standing on the “rubber” at the top of the mound.
Example: The pitcher stood tall on the pitcher’s mound and took a deep breath before throwing a fast strike to the batter.
