A pump fake is a deceptive move where a player pretends to throw. This action involves a quick arm motion that stops before the ball is released. A thrower fakes a high toss to make a defender jump or flinch. This trickery often causes the opponent to lose their balance or drop their shield. Once the defender is out of position the thrower releases the ball for real. Using pump fakes prevents the defense from timing their dodges or catches effectively. It is a mental game that requires believable body language to fool the opponent. This move is most effective when used against overly aggressive or jumpy defenders.
