Ball Plate Meaning in Softball

Ball plate means the rubber slab on the pitcher’s mound. Pitchers must place one foot on this plate. The plate anchors the pitching motion toward home. Umpires watch foot contact during the delivery. Stepping incorrectly can cause illegal pitches. The plate sits elevated above the infield dirt. Pitchers push off the plate for power. Good balance starts with firm contact on the surface. During a tight game, the pitcher drove off the ball plate and threw a strike. That strong push created extra speed on the pitch. Consistent foot placement improves control and accuracy.
