Definition: A sacrifice fly occurs when a batter hits a fly ball deep into the outfield that is caught for an out, but allows a teammate on third base to “tag up” and score a run. The batter “sacrifices” their own turn at bat to help the team get a point.
Example: Even though the center fielder caught the ball, the play was a success because the sacrifice fly allowed the runner to sprint home from third base.
