Save Meaning in Baseball

Definition: A save is a statistic awarded to a relief pitcher who enters the game under specific “close” conditions and successfully maintains their team’s lead until the end of the game. To earn a save, the pitcher usually enters with a lead of three runs or fewer and finishes the game without losing that lead.

Example: The closer entered the game in the ninth inning with a two-run lead and retired all three batters to earn his twentieth save of the season.
