Courtesy Runner Meaning in Softball

A courtesy runner replaces a pitcher or catcher on the bases to speed up the game. This substitution allows the primary players to put on their protective gear while someone else runs. The game does not stop or slow down because the battery remains ready for the next half-inning. This rule usually applies when there are two outs to ensure the game stays on schedule. A teammate ran for the catcher after she hit a double with two outs recorded. Coaches choose fast bench players for this role to increase the chance of scoring a run. Using a courtesy runner does not count as an official substitution in most competitive softball leagues.
