Deep Meaning in Softball

Deep refers to a position located far away from the home plate hitting area. Outfielders play deep when they stand near the back fence of the softball field. This placement prevents the ball from flying over the heads of the defensive players. Fielders prioritize catching long fly balls over stopping short hits in front of them. A center fielder moves back to the wall to catch a very high hit. Standing deep allows the player to track the ball as it travels through air. This strategy works best against hitters who consistently drive the ball to the fence. Teams adjust their depth based on the specific strengths of each individual batter.
