This move relies on the defense relaxing after the ball reaches the catcher’s mitt. Baserunners look for a slow return throw to the pitcher to start running. A runner on first base starts sprinting as the catcher begins a casual toss. The surprise timing makes it difficult for the defense to react and throw.
