A designated hitter is a specific player who bats in the lineup for the pitcher. This player does not participate in any defensive actions on the softball field during the game. The designated hitter only focuses on offensive contributions to help the team score more runs. This role allows a strong hitter to play without needing skills for catching or throwing. Coaches often choose a designated hitter when the pitcher is not a proficient offensive batter. A batter enters the game in the fourth spot to hit specifically for the starting pitcher. The pitcher remains in the game to throw but does not take a turn batting. This position ensures the team maintains a powerful offense throughout the entire batting order. Proper use of this role can significantly increase the total scoring potential of a team.
