A double is a successful hit that allows the batter to reach second base safely. The player must touch first base and continue running without getting tagged by the ball. This type of hit usually travels into the gaps between the outfielders in the grass. A double often drives in runners who were already standing on the bases before the hit. A batter hits a sharp ball into the right field corner and slides into second. The defense tries to return the ball quickly to stop the runner at the first base. Speed and a good turn around the first base bag help a player reach second. Hitters look for pitches they can drive deep into the outfield to achieve this result. Recording a double puts the hitter in a prime position to score on the next hit.
